Winter coats for men and women

A good winter coat needs to do three things: keep you warm, keep the wind out and still look smart over whatever you are wearing. Every wool coat here is a 70% wool, 25% polyester, 5% cashmere blend, fully lined, and cut long enough to cover a suit jacket. Men's coats are £140 to £160, women's are £140 to £160, all with free tracked UK delivery.

The warmest coats we make

• Men: the Greatcoat (£160). Double breasted and about 46 inches long, so you get two layers of wool across the chest and cover well below the knee.
• Women: the Double Breasted Overcoat (£160). About 49 inches, with a relaxed cut that fits over thick knitwear.

For everyday wear over a suit, most men go for the Covert or the Long Overcoat. Most women go for the women's Covert or the Long Belted Overcoat.

How warm is a wool overcoat?

Warm enough for a normal British winter over a suit or a jumper. Wool traps air and stays warm even when it is damp, which matters more in the UK than raw thickness. The trench coats in this collection are cotton, not wool. They are better for autumn, spring and rain than for deep winter.

Delivery and returns

UK delivery is free and tracked and usually takes 2 to 3 days, with next day delivery if you order before 1pm. US orders ship free from our US warehouse in 5 to 7 days. You have 30 days to return a coat unworn with the tags on.

What is the warmest type of winter coat?

For a smart coat, a long double breasted wool overcoat. The overlapping front and the extra length keep far more heat in than a short or single breasted coat.

When should I buy a winter coat?

October and November give you the best choice of sizes. Popular sizes sell out as the weather turns.
