Men's Wool Overcoat Under £200: What's Actually Worth Buying in the UK

Published October 2026. Written by The Platinum Tailor, a family tailoring business making wool overcoats since 2012.

Quick answer

Yes, you can get a warm, smart men's wool overcoat in the UK for under £200. At this price, expect a wool blend rather than pure wool, and look for wool as the main fibre (ideally 60 to 80%), a full lining in the body and sleeves, a length at or below the knee and a clear returns policy. Avoid coats sold as "wool look", anything with acrylic as a main fibre, and unlined coats. Direct to customer brands and the January sales are where the best value usually sits.

What is realistic under £200

You can expect You usually will not get
A wool blend with wool as the main fibre 100% wool from a named British or Italian mill
A full satin or polyester lining A sewn canvas front
A long length, at or below the knee Hand finished buttonholes and details
A little cashmere in some blends High cashmere content
Several winters of daily wear with care A coat that lasts twenty years

Never compromise on these

  1. Wool as the main fibre. This is what makes it warm. Under 50% and you are paying for a synthetic coat. Our guide to what percentage wool a coat should be explains every blend.
  2. A full lining. Body and sleeves. It adds warmth and lets the coat slide on over a jacket.
  3. Shoulders that fit. Sleeves and hems can be altered cheaply. Shoulders cannot.
  4. Length. At or below the knee for a winter coat. A short coat for £150 is a jacket.
  5. A returns or exchange policy. Coats are hard to size online. You need to be able to swap.

Fine to compromise on

  • Some polyester or nylon. When wool is the main fibre, they add strength and help the coat hold its shape.
  • A fused rather than canvassed front. Almost every coat at this price is fused. A good fused coat looks sharp for years.
  • Machine made details. They do not affect warmth or how the coat looks from a few feet away.
  • The brand name. At this price, you are better off with a less famous label and more wool than a famous label and more polyester.

Red flags

  • "Wool look", "wool feel" or "wool touch" in the name.
  • No fibre composition shown on the product page.
  • Acrylic listed as a main fibre.
  • Unlined sleeves.
  • Lots of very similar reviews with no photos.
  • No UK returns address or vague returns terms.

Where the best value is

Direct to customer brands. Brands that sell online without a department store in the middle can put more of the price into the cloth. That is the model we use, and it is why our coats are £140 to £160.

The January sales. Mid range brands often cut winter coats into the £150 to £250 range from late December. The catch is that popular sizes sell out first.

The high street, carefully. Some high street wool coats are good value. Many are mostly polyester. Read every label.

Second hand. eBay and charity shops are full of older pure wool overcoats from brands that used heavier cloth than most do now. Fit is the gamble. Check the shoulders and lining, and budget for a dry clean.

Making a £200 coat last

A coat at this price lasts much longer with a little care. Brush it after wearing, hang it on a broad wooden hanger, let it rest a day between wears, dry clean once a season at most, and store it in a breathable bag over summer. Our care guide covers the details.

Frequently asked questions

Can you get a good wool coat for under £200?

Yes. Look for a blend with wool as the main fibre, a full lining, a length at or below the knee and a clear returns policy. Pure wool is rare at this price, but well made wool blends are not.

What should a £150 overcoat be made of?

Ideally 60 to 80% wool, with the rest polyester, nylon or a little cashmere. Avoid coats at this price that are mostly polyester or acrylic.

Are cheap wool coats warm?

A cheap coat with wool as the main fibre and a full lining can be warm. A cheap coat that is mostly polyester or acrylic will not be, whatever it is called.

When are men's overcoats cheapest in the UK?

In the January sales and at the end of winter in February and March. Choice of sizes is best in October and November.

How long should a £200 wool coat last?

With regular brushing, proper hanging and occasional dry cleaning, a well made wool blend coat should give you several winters of daily wear.

Where can I buy an affordable men's wool overcoat online in the UK?

Start with direct to customer brands. They sell online without a department store in the middle, so more of the price goes into the cloth and lining. Wherever you buy, check that the fibre content is listed, wool is the main fibre, the coat is fully lined and there is a UK returns address. Our men's wool overcoats are £140 to £160, 70% wool with 5% cashmere, fully lined, with free tracked UK delivery and next day delivery on orders before 1pm.

Every coat in our men's range is under £200. Wool and cashmere, fully lined, free tracked UK delivery.
