Sizing & Fit
How do I know which size to order?
The most important measurement is your chest. Take a soft tape measure, wrap it around the fullest part of your chest under your arms, keeping it level. Take the measurement over a shirt or light layer, not over a thick jacket. Note it in inches.
If your chest is 42 inches, order a size 42. There is no need to size up. Our coats are cut to comfortably accommodate layers underneath, including a suit jacket and a knit.
Our full size guide covers sleeve length, shoulder width, and what to do if you're between sizes.
I'm between sizes. Should I size up or down?
Size up if you plan to wear the coat over thicker layers like a suit jacket or chunky knit. Size down if you prefer a slimmer, more tailored fit and only plan to layer a shirt or fine knit underneath.
If you're really not sure, email us your chest measurement and what you'll be wearing underneath. We'll tell you which size we'd recommend.
How are your coats meant to fit?
Our coats are cut as proper overcoats, not slim fashion coats. That means:
- Clean shoulders that sit at your natural shoulder line
- Enough room through the body for a suit jacket without pulling
- Sleeves that finish at the wrist bone, allowing about half an inch of shirt cuff to show
- Length that falls at or below the knee for our long cuts, mid-thigh for shorter cuts
If a coat pulls across the back when buttoned, it's too small. Size up.
Will the coat work for tall or shorter men?
Our long cuts are 46 inches from collar to hem. On a man of average height (5'9" to 5'11") this falls at or just below the knee. On a taller man, the same coat sits above the knee and reads as a more contemporary length. On a shorter man, the coat sits well below the knee and reads as more traditional and formal. All work.
If you're under 5'7" and want the coat to sit at the knee, a tailor can shorten it for around £30 to £50.
Our Coats
What are your coats made from?
Our wool overcoats are made from a 70% wool and 5%cashmere blend. The wool provides structure and warmth. The cashmere softens the handle and improves the drape. The exact composition is listed on each product page.
Our trench coat is 65% cotton and 35% polyester with a water-resistant finish.
All linings are satin (typically polyester satin for durability). Linings are colour-matched to each coat — most are black or red.
Are your coats warm enough for winter?
Yes. A wool and cashmere overcoat is warmer than a synthetic coat of the same weight. Wool fibres trap air, which acts as insulation, and continue to insulate when slightly damp, which matters in a UK winter.
For very cold weather, our double breasted coats and the greatcoat are warmer than the single breasted cuts because the overlapping front adds a second layer of fabric across the chest.
Do you sell coats for women?
Yes. Our women's range sits under the Her collection. The cuts are tailored to a woman's shoulder and waist line, and the sizing follows UK women's sizes (UK 8 to UK 18).
Same fabric, same construction, same price.
What's the difference between single and double breasted?
Single breasted has one row of buttons. It's the more versatile and everyday choice. Works over a suit, with jeans, with a roll-neck. It dresses up or down without effort.
Double breasted has two rows of buttons and an overlapping front. It's more formal and more commanding. Better suited to formal occasions, city dressing, or anyone who wants the coat to make a statement.
If you're buying your first overcoat, start with single breasted.
What is a covert coat?
The covert overcoat is a specifically British style with a velvet collar and a concealed button placket. It originated as country wear in the late Victorian era and became associated with British professional dress in the twentieth century. The Peaky Blinders coat is a covert coat.
It's our most popular cut. The velvet collar is what defines it.

Returns & Exchanges
What's your returns policy?
You have 30 days from the date of delivery to return or exchange a coat. The coat must be in unworn, original condition with all tags attached.
To start a return or exchange, email info@theplatinumtailor.co.uk with your order number and we'll send you the details.
Are returns free?
Return postage is paid by the customer. We don't include this in our pricing because it would push the price up for everyone, including the majority of customers who don't return.
Exchanges (where you want a different size of the same coat) are sent back out free of charge once we receive your original.
The coat doesn't fit. Can I exchange for a different size?
Yes. As long as it's within 30 days and the coat is unworn, we're happy to exchange. Email us first so we can hold the new size for you while your original makes its way back.
What if there's a fault with my coat?
This very rarely happens, but if it does, contact us straight away with photos of the issue. We'll arrange for the coat to be returned at our cost and either replace it or refund you in full.

What payment methods do you accept?
We accept all major credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express), Apple Pay, Google Pay, Shop Pay, PayPal, and Klarna.

About The Platinum Tailor
Who are you and where are you based?
The Platinum Tailor is an independent, family-run brand based in London. We've been making men's wool and cashmere overcoats since 2012 — over 13 years.
Our registered address is 36 Knightland Road, London E5 9HS (A & H Bawa Limited, company number 10515096).
How can your prices be so low compared to other tailors?
Three reasons:
- Direct to consumer. No middlemen, no department store markups, no wholesale margin. Heritage tailors charge £500+ for similar fabric and construction. Most of that difference is retail markup, not better fabric.
- One specialty. We make overcoats. Not suits, shirts, ties, or trousers. That focus means we know our fabric and our cut better than a general retailer.
- Online first. No high street rent, no shop fitting costs, no retail staff overheads. The savings go to the customer.
We've been doing this for 13 years. The price is genuinely the price.
Where are your coats made?
Our coats are designed in London and manufactured in partnership with established overcoat workshops abroad. The fabric, construction, and finishing are specified and quality-checked by us. We've worked with the same partners for years and the consistency of the product reflects that.
Do you have a physical shop?
No. We sell exclusively online, which is part of how we keep prices competitive for a wool and cashmere coat. We do offer a 30-day returns window so you can try the coat at home with no pressure.
Are your reviews real?
Yes. We use Judge.me, which only allows verified customers to leave reviews. Each review is tied to a real order. We've collected over 150 five-star reviews this way, and you can read them on every product page.
Looking After Your Coat
How do I clean a wool overcoat?
Dry clean only. Wool and cashmere should not be washed in a machine — it ruins the structure and can cause the fabric to felt or shrink.
You won't need to dry clean often. Once or twice a season is enough for a coat in regular use. Spot clean small marks with a damp cloth between cleans.
How do I store my coat in summer?
Hang it on a wide wooden hanger so the shoulders keep their shape. Cover with a breathable cotton garment bag, never plastic. Store in a cool, dry wardrobe away from direct sunlight.
Add a couple of cedar blocks or lavender bags to deter moths. Don't use mothballs — the smell lingers in the wool.
The coat got wet. What should I do?
Hang it on a wide hanger somewhere with good airflow, away from direct heat (no radiators, no hairdryers). Let it dry naturally. Wool handles damp well as long as it's dried properly.
If the coat gets soaked, shake it out, blot the worst with a clean towel, and hang it as above.
How long should one of your coats last?
A well-cared-for wool overcoat lasts a decade or more. The fabric doesn't deteriorate the way synthetic coats do. You may need to replace buttons or have it pressed and cleaned periodically, but the coat itself should outlast most of your wardrobe.
A £150 coat worn 100 days a year for ten years works out to 15 pence per wear.
