When Is It Cold Enough for a Wool Coat? When to Start and Stop Wearing One
Updated October 2026. Written by The Platinum Tailor, a family tailoring business making wool overcoats since 2012.
Quick answer
Most people reach for a wool overcoat once daytime temperatures drop to around 12Β°C or below, especially if it is windy or damp. In most of the UK that happens in mid to late October and lasts until late March or April. Between about 12 and 16Β°C, a wool coat worn open over a shirt is comfortable, or you can wear a trench coat. Above 16Β°C, most people will find a wool overcoat too warm.
The temperature guide
| Temperature | Coat | How to wear it |
|---|---|---|
| Above 16Β°C | No overcoat. A light jacket or blazer | A linen or cotton blazer is ideal |
| 12 to 16Β°C | Trench coat, or wool overcoat worn open | Over a shirt or a thin knit |
| 8 to 12Β°C | Wool overcoat | Over a jumper or suit, buttoned if windy |
| 3 to 8Β°C | Wool overcoat | Buttoned, with a scarf |
| Below 3Β°C | Long or double breasted wool overcoat | Thick knit, scarf, gloves, maybe a hat |
Wind and rain change everything. A 10Β°C day with a strong wind feels colder than a still 5Β°C morning. If the forecast says windy, treat it as a few degrees colder than the number.
When does coat season start in the UK?
For most of England, Wales and Northern Ireland, daytime highs start dropping into the low teens through October, and early mornings get properly cold by the end of the month. That is when most people start wearing a wool coat every day. In Scotland and the north it tends to come a couple of weeks earlier. In London and the south east, where cities hold their heat, you might get to early November in a coat worn open.
The clocks going back at the end of October is a good reminder. Darker evenings mean colder commutes home, and that is usually the point where a light jacket stops being enough.
What to wear in the in between weeks
Autumn and spring are the hard part: cold mornings, mild afternoons and rain at any point. Three ways to handle it:
- Wear the wool coat open. A single breasted overcoat worn open over a shirt or thin knit is comfortable well into the mid teens. Wool breathes, so you will not overheat the way you would in a padded jacket.
- Switch to a trench coat. It keeps the rain off without the warmth. See trench coat vs overcoat.
- Layer underneath, not on top. A thin merino jumper you can take off indoors is more flexible than a heavier coat.
When to put the coat away
Once daytime highs are reliably above 15 or 16Β°C, usually by late April or May, it is time to put the wool coat away. Do it properly so it is ready for next October:
- Brush it thoroughly and empty the pockets.
- Dry clean it if it has had a full season of wear, since moths are drawn to dirty wool.
- Hang it on a broad wooden hanger in a breathable cotton garment bag, not plastic.
- Add cedar blocks or lavender to keep moths away.

Frequently asked questions
What temperature should you wear a wool coat?
Around 12Β°C and below for most people. Between 12 and 16Β°C you can wear one open over a shirt. Above 16Β°C it will usually feel too warm.
When should I start wearing a winter coat in the UK?
Usually from mid to late October, when daytime highs drop into the low teens and mornings get cold. Earlier in Scotland and the north, slightly later in London.
Is it too warm to wear a wool coat in spring?
Not in early spring. In March and April a wool coat worn open is comfortable on most days. Once highs are above about 16Β°C, switch to a trench or a blazer.
Can you wear a wool coat at 15 degrees?
Yes, worn open over a shirt or a thin knit. Wool breathes, so it is comfortable across a wider range of temperatures than a padded jacket.
How should I store a wool coat over summer?
Brush and clean it, then hang it on a broad wooden hanger in a breathable cotton garment bag with cedar or lavender to deter moths. Avoid plastic covers.
