Best Women's Winter Coats 2026/27: Styles, Trends and What to Look For

Updated October 2026. Written by The Platinum Tailor, a family tailoring business making wool overcoats since 2012.

Quick answer

For winter 2026/27, the most useful women's coat is a long wool coat that falls below the knee, in black or another neutral, with enough room for a jumper underneath. Belted coats and double breasted coats are both strong this season, and long lengths are everywhere. For colour, black is timeless, while soft white, deep reds and burgundy are this winter's trend shades. Whatever the style, check that wool is the main fibre and the coat is fully lined.

What is in for women's coats this winter

  • Long wool coats. Knee length and longer is the defining shape of the season. Who What Wear's round up of long wool coats for 2026 runs from high street to designer, which tells you how widely the look has spread.
  • Belts and defined waists. A belted coat gives shape over bulky layers and can be worn tied or loose.
  • Double breasted. Wide lapels and two columns of buttons for a bolder, warmer coat.
  • Colour beyond black. Soft white, apple red, mulberry and cobalt are being pushed as alternatives to the black coat, according to Who What Wear's winter colour edit. Black remains the coat most women wear most often.

The covert coat

A tailored, knee length coat with a black velvet collar and a concealed button front. It is the most polished coat you can wear over workwear, a dress or tailored trousers, and it suits formal occasions too. Ours comes with a red or black satin lining. Read about the history in the velvet collar overcoat.

The long belted coat

A three button coat with a belt you can tie at the waist or leave loose. Belted, it gives shape even over a chunky jumper. Unbelted, it is a clean, straight long coat. At 44 inches it falls below the knee.

The relaxed double breasted coat

Our longest women's coat at 49 inches, with a wide lapel, eight buttons and a half belt at the back that shapes the waist without restricting movement. It has the flowing, generous shape that is right for this season and gives proper winter coverage.

The trench

Not a winter coat in the warmest sense, but the right coat for the wet months either side of winter. Full traditional details and 46 inches long. See trench coat vs overcoat.

How to choose a winter coat that lasts

  1. Read the label. Wool should be the main fibre. Coats sold as "wool look" or "wool feel" often contain very little. Ours are 70% wool, 25% polyester and 5% cashmere.
  2. Get the shoulders right. A tailor can take in a waist or shorten sleeves, but shoulders are hard to change. The seam should sit at the edge of your shoulder.
  3. Leave room for a jumper. Try it on, or size it, as if you are wearing a knit underneath.
  4. Choose a length you will wear daily. Below the knee is warmest. Knee length is the most versatile with dresses and boots.
  5. Check the lining. A full lining adds warmth and lets the coat slide over sleeves.

Frequently asked questions

What coat styles are in for women in 2026?

Long wool coats below the knee, belted coats and double breasted coats are the key shapes. Soft white, red and burgundy are trend colours, with black still the most worn.

What is the warmest type of women's coat?

Among smart coats, a long, fully lined, double breasted wool coat is the warmest, because it covers more of you and overlaps across the chest. For extreme cold, a down coat is warmer but less smart.

What length coat is best for winter?

Below the knee is warmest and the strongest look this season. Knee length is the most versatile over dresses and with boots.

Should I size up in a women's winter coat?

Not usually with our coats, which are cut to fit over a jumper. Order your normal UK size. If you are between sizes or like to layer heavily, size up.

Is a black coat still in style?

Yes. Black is the most versatile coat colour and never goes out of style. Trend colours come and go, but a black wool coat works every winter.
